The shopping area Bishopdale is sprouting from new businesses and that means not only shopper but servicemen attracted to the area. Brian is pushing his trolley through the parking lot with zeal in his eyes but he can spare a couple of minutes to explain what he is doing here. “I clean kitchen equipment, deep fryers mostly. I tell you cleaning one shouldn’t take more than 20 minutes. I soak them and rub them then recycle the oil to biodiesel. Using chemicals doesn’t pay because afterwards you have to clean the oil. It’s faster and cleaner without. I work in the area but even this way I travel more than 600km a week. Before this I used to be an engineer then a chef and have been cleaning kitchen equipment for 12 years now. I lost business after the earthquakes but it’s picking up now. It must be only a few of us but I actually thought the earthquakes themselves were fun.”
