Te Miringa watches her older sister getting a temporary pattern on her chin then holds up her face for a different design to be placed on her own face. The girls wear the temporary pattern or Moko as a tribute to their maori ancestry and heritage. The permanent face markings of traditional maori custom identify their wearers by designs that tell about their family history and position. After her face marked, Te Miringa joins her sister chatting fluent maori with her. Soon, the girls are off to the market’s stage to perform a traditional dance with their friends. (Their mum was up to something interesting too, stay tuned for her story!)
