Korena is offering a selection of slices and a smile as she is participating in a fundraising event. Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Te Whanau Tahi school is planning to send students to the 50th Nga Manu Korero secondary school speech contest in Prorirua. The trip costs several hundred dollars per child so the parents offer home baking, woven baskets, artwork and moko painting to make the trip possible for the brightest kids. Last Sunday the rain made it difficult to raise much money, but this week the parents are cheerfully chatting away in maori language as people pick their choices from the tables to support the school.
