An American car tuns up among the houses with five bright hats and smiles inside. I can’t help wondering what they are up to so I follow them to the end of Randolph St where they get out of the shiny 1962 Mercury Monterey S55. The driver’s seat is occupied by Fraser, the youngest of the family. Fraser tells me that the family set out on this spring trip to understand the life of their parents better who are in their seventies. Number 113 Randolph St was today’s special place to visit because his mum, Julie used to live here as a child fifty-five years ago. Julie can see all the changes time has brought to this corner of Christchurch: “The bridge is different, the park too, and of course, the people.” The family wears Fraser dress tartan hats of clan to celebrate the trip, and they are off to learn more about their father the next day.
