Alex is taking her sleepy son, Seth home after preschool and playground-time. Seth goes to preschool three times a week while his mums work. Alex came to New Zealand from England, and finds kiwis more relaxed and open. “If we were back in England, we would probably only have same-sex couples as friends. Here, it’s not an issue. We have some same-sex couple friends but many of them are straight and it’s just fine.” Alex and her partner decided to take on both father and mother roles for little Seth instead of separating parenting roles. Still, he learns to call them both mommies. Clearly, Alex is fit and sporty enough to fulfill whatever role she decides to take on. As a devoted mum, she doesn’t let me hold them up for long. Seth needs his afternoon nap, he is only thirteen months old.
