A clear grassy area provides a running field in Hansen Park. Today it is a bit windy despite of the shelter of the surrounding trees. Leo comes for his daily run nevertheless. “I’m 86 years old, I’ve been running for 56 years. Me and my wife we had 5 kids in 7 years. I worked all day and in the evening my family needed me so I could only run in my lunch breaks during the week. I didn’t run on Sundays, so as far as my family was concerned I only run once a week on a Saturday afternoon after the boys’ match. I was one of the first people who run at lunchtime in Hagley Park, it was very unusual then. You should have seen the cars tooting and even fingers, it was crazy!” Leo is a running coach with his own unique coaching system. “I believe you should run against yourself but out of enjoyment. I am myself not a good runner but I enjoy it. My best runner, Richard Lindroos for example trained last on a Tuesday for a major race on a Saturday. But an other runner of mine did eight times 200m on the Thursday. If he didn’t do it, the race was a no-go.”
