Hagley Park features many ornamental lakes but the largest one is the Victoria Lake. Even the fact that it has water in it now shows how much hidden reconstruction happens in the city. The lake lost all it’s water after the February earthquake. Today however it looks as peaceful as if nothing happened only five years ago, and many small white sails decorate the quiet waters. The Canterbury Model Yacht Club is out in the park racing their miniature vessels even in the sprinkling rain. Peter has been a member only since October. “But the club is much older than that, actually this is the second oldest Model Yacht Club in the world. It was founded in 1989. We are racing now but I’m not doing very well mostly because of the lack of the wind. There are about fifty or sixty members, normally at least twenty-five shows up.” “Haha, there is a reason!” – exclaims the gentleman right next to Peter “The email went out that there is no race today due to the rain. Only those members are present who can’t read!”
