As insurance issues are getting settled recovery work goes on in the industrial areas of Christchurch as well as in the residential areas. After re-sealing a parking lot in front of the Comcare Trust building Gary and Dave apply the paint for the mobility and regular parking spaces. This is one of the 30-40 jobs they do each week alongside the re-build efforts. Gary, originally a coal salesman for twenty years has eventually changed careers to marking asphalt. “I did it after I got tired of being nice to people. Mind you I still have a lot of people in this job I can be not nice to.” – he tells me jokingly. Evidently I am not one of them, the gentlemen helpfully let me photograph the picturesque process of painting precise right angle lines on the dark grey smooth surface. Gary efficiently changes the equipment from the vivid yellow paint to the pure white one after doing the mobility marking. “This was just a small job, we are going to do a medium-sized one now.” Even though it’s Saturday there are three parking lots to mark before the weekend really starts for Gary.
