Cranmer Square is a historic square in Christchurch first laid out in 1860’s during the development of the Educational Precinct. Now it’s also important because this is the closest free parking lot to the inner city where parking lots are gradually reduced and prices pushed up to encourage environmentally friendly alternative traveling options especially cycling. After a typical summer windstorm it is still cluttered with broken branches and leaves. Glen and his workmates, Ian, Nigel and Paul came by car, so they walk back to the free carpark together after they finished still chatting on the lane when I find them. “We are just heading home now, working long hours on the Art Gallery. They cut the foundation in half and we have to install joints to allow the top of the building move independently if another earthquake strikes. We have two weeks to finish so the pressure is big.” The guys, three out of the four being irish also have hurley and sliotar with them. Hurling is an irish game and despite of being australian Glen is also keen. His hurley is more masculine but Paul holds a pink hurley. “This belongs to my girlfriend though.” – he laughs.
